Their hopes for glory have been reinforced during an incredible 36-match winless streak that began in 2019, and have become even more acute after Messi's recent statements that this will be his last World Cup. The diminutive 35-year-old has been in brilliant form for club and country over the past year, opening his second season at Paris Saint-Germain with 12 goals and 14 assists in 19 games.
He is considered by many to be the greatest player of his generation, and he will be assisted by a number of talented players in Qatar, including strikers Angel Di Maria and Lautaro Martinez and midfielders Rodrigo De Paul and Leandro Paredes.
Argentina also has a weak defense, reducing the Green Falcons' chances of success and reinforcing predictions by some that the South American team could return to Lusail Stadium for the World Cup final on Dec. 18. But Saudi Arabia will be determined to try to upset the Albiceleste, who last won the World Cup in 1986.
Match Analysis
To succeed, the Saudis must be impeccably organized in their half of the field and ready to beat the Argentines on the break when opportunities to counterattack present themselves.Manager Hervé Renard is well aware of the magnitude of the task ahead, with tough matches against Group C rivals Poland and Mexico coming up. Nevertheless, he and his players are drawing strength from a superb qualifying campaign that saw them secure their place in this year's tournament with two matches to spare, securing their sixth World Cup appearance since their first appearance in 1994.
Salem Al-Dawsari is considered a threat
Talisman Salem Al-Dawsari will be Saudi Arabia's biggest threat thanks to his creative play on the flanks and enters the competition on the back of the most prolific season of his career to date, having scored many goals for Riyadh-based club Al-Hilal.The 31-year-old is unlikely to lack support in the stands, as tens of thousands of fans from Saudi Arabia are expected to attend the first-ever World Cup in the Middle East. Among them will be Abdullah Alsulmi, who walked more than 1,500 kilometers (930 miles) from the Red Sea port city of Jeddah to Qatar to support his team.
But regardless of the results, the very appearance of the team at the tournament is a victory of sorts for its fans. For more than three years, Riyadh led a regional economic blockade of Qatar that threatened to undermine Saudi Arabia's participation in the competition, and some feared the tournament itself.
Now that's history: The blockade was lifted in early 2021. Saudi Arabia and Argentina will focus on next month, starting Tuesday.
