Belgium's aging "golden generation" welcomes an enthusiastic Canadian team to its first World Cup appearance since 1986.
Who: Belgium v Canada Group F
Where: Ahmed bin Ali Stadium, Al Rayyan
When:19:00 (16:00 GMT)

Belgian chances to win

This is perhaps the first time since Euro 2016 that Belgium has arrived at a major tournament without being named as a contender – the luster of their Golden Generation has faded.
They have won each of their six group matches at the last two World Cups, but this time they will have to fight in a group that includes 2018 finalists Croatia, Morocco and their first leg opponents, Canada.
The Canadian Maple Leafs arrived in Doha full of hope. This will be their second appearance at the World Championships - the first since 1986.
Belgium's track record over the past few years shows them comfortably beating lower ranked teams but running into a quality opponent. They lost to eventual champions France at the 2018 World Cup and Italy in the Euro quarter-finals last year.
One of the standout Belgian players at the 2018 World Cup, Eden Hazard has barely played for Real Madrid since his move in 2019. Although many have called for Leandro Trossard to replace him as a starter, manager Roberto Martinez has faith in his captain. didn't flinch.
Romelu Lukaku suffered from injuries and poor form last year, and the Red Devils lack a strong substitute striker to make up for his absence. The founders of their defense, Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld, are 68 years old in total.
Kevin de Bruyne and Thibaut Courtois, perhaps the only two world-class players on the team, will be key to Belgium's chances.
The Maple Leafs secured their place in the tournament in style, winning eight of 14 games in the CONCACAF qualifiers, defeating heavyweights Mexico and the United States.

Canada's chances of winning

While 22-year-old Bayern Munich defender Alphonso Davies is Canada's undisputed star, Lille striker Jonathan David and Brugge striker Sile Larin proved themselves in qualifying. Larin was the top scorer with 11 goals, while David narrowly finished second with nine goals.
The pace and pressure of the Canadian attack would make for an exciting battle against the aging but experienced Belgian rearguard. The only time the two teams have met before was a friendly in 1989 when Belgium won 2-0.
Belgium enter the World Cup in a neutral form, having lost to the Netherlands and Egypt in their last two matches. Canada, too, has only won two of its last five games.
