After 12 years of preparation, the World Cup kicked off with an opening ceremony that kicked off on Sunday at Qatar's Al-Bayt Stadium.
The 30-minute ceremony, narrated by Hollywood actor Morgan Freeman, included performances by an all-star cast of artists and singers, including K-pop sensation Jungkook of South Korean supergroup BTS and Qatari singer Fahad Al Qubaisi.
Fireworks lit up the night sky over the stadium, located about 44 kilometers north of Qatar's capital, Doha.
The theme of the ceremony was unity and inclusiveness.
“May this tournament be filled with inspiring days of goodness and hope,” said the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, as he welcomed peace in Doha.
Across the region, fans filled cafes in Erbil, Iraq, crowded around TV screens in pubs in Istanbul, Turkey, and packed a sports hall in Gaza City to witness the opening ceremony - and the first World Cup match to be played in the Middle East. Eastern soil.
All attention was focused on tiny and energy-rich Qatar, and some hoped that this attention could break stereotypes.
"I didn't expect that one day an Arab country would host the World Cup," Rasul Fareed, 26, told Al Jazeera in a cafe in the northern Iraqi city of Erbil.
“It is positive that the World Cup in an Arab country will give us a different impression than the stereotypes. I'm here to support the Qatari team."

Qatar vs Ecuador

Qatar and Ecuador entered the field at 19:00 local time (16:00 GMT).
Qatar failed to impress in their first World Cup match, losing 2-0 to an energetic Ecuador led by Enner Valencia who scored two unanswered goals from a penalty and then a header.
Just three minutes later, the referees called the first goal of the match after a header from Ecuadorian Valencia from a long-range free-kick in the half field by Pervis Estupinan.
The goal was ultimately rejected by the video assistant referee (VAR).
Valencia later scored their first goal against Qatari goalkeeper Saad al-Shib from a penalty in the 15th minute of the match. He then scored his second goal with a header from a cross just outside the penalty area just before the end of the first half.
Qatar dominated the second half. However, the home team struggled to capitalize on any fleeting momentum they created, failing to land any of their five shots on goal throughout the match.
For Qatar, now facing a tough battle in Group A, the defeat marked the first time in a World Cup that a host team lost the opening match.
“Everything that came before the game was great. But that performance was very poor,” one Qatari fan told Al Jazeera after the match.
Elsewhere in Doha, chaotic scenes occurred at the FIFA Fan Fest in Al Bidda Park after tens of thousands of fans filled the venue, news outlets 1win reported.
The 40,000-seat venue was overwhelmed by at least twice as many people, and police ended up having to escort thousands of angry fans from the waiting area between the main festival park and the perimeter entrance.
"They let too many people in," one fan told Reuters, holding a three-year-old.
"We never made it to the main zone and I was glad to leave."
Inside, rowdy fans dressed in their country's colors waved flags and lined up to pay $14 for a glass of beer, with revelers limited to four per person.
“So far it has been good people, good weather, everything has been good,” said Danish fan Emil Larsen.
“And it was hard to find something to drink, you know, like beer. But so far so good."
3 more matches of the World Cup start today, the broadcast will be available on the official 1win website .
