Reports say that Laos has been sent home from Qatar and that he will not be officiating any of the tournament's remaining four matches.
Just days after Argentine superstar Lionel Messi claimed that Spanish referee Antonio Mateu Laos should not have officiated Argentina's wild victory over the Netherlands in the World Cup quarter-finals at Lusail Stadium, reports say Laos was sent home from Qatar and that he did not serve any of the remaining four matches of the tournament. The Mirror report says that after several complaints were received against the referee, it was decided that he would no longer take part in the tournament.
“FIFA needs to reconsider this, they cannot give such a referee a match of such importance when he is not up to the task.”
He added: “We didn’t have a great game and then the referee sent it to extra time. He has always been against us. There was no foul in the last rally."
Mateu Laos showed a total of 16 yellow cards and Netherlands full-back Denzel Dumfries was sent off after a penalty shoot-out for a second yellow card.
Messi scored his fourth goal of the tournament from a spot in the 73rd minute from an earlier assist from Nahuel Molina.
Goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez was a hero, saving the Netherlands' first two penalties before Lautaro Martinez delivered the winning kick.
"We didn't want extra time or penalties," Messi said. “We suffered too much because of the way it happened, but this is the quarter-final of the World Cup.
“We knew how to suffer when it was our turn, but we made it to the semi-finals. It's beautiful, something spectacular."
